BLOODY BEANS

Narimane Mari

algeria france 2013 77 min

On an Algerian beach, a group of children play, argue and splash in the waves before suddenly turning their games into war. Through their imagination, they reenact the Algerian War of Independence, attacking French military positions, stealing food and eventually capturing a French soldier. Their seemingly carefree adventure gradually takes on the darker reality of history, as childhood play becomes an allegory for the end of French Algeria.
